Saturday until firings
end, Sunday evening
This intensive will cover a number of glazing, and
kiln loading techniques used in woodfiring, as well as how and why to
control fire and air to not only reach cone 11 to 12 temperatures, but
also how to use the atmospheric affects of the flame and ash to draw
out the natural beauty of clay and enhance effects of the glazes used.
The kiln being used is designed as a convertible
Gas/Wood fired kiln. It can be used as one or the other or in
combination. In this firing we will use all wood for the
maximum atmospheric affect. Anything from sculptural and handbuilt
clay work, to textured and alter thrown forms, will show the most
contrast by this firing technique, while simple functional pots will
also be enhanced by subtleties of the fire.
Wednesday
will be devoted to glazing your bisqued pieces for flame and ash.
There will be examples of how certain glazes work differently in the
woodfiring from gas firings . A variety of glazes will be provided
and you will be encouraged to test glazes, including glazes you normally
use.
Thursday
and Friday will be a busy days of loading. The fire box
area will be used for unglazed pieces for a Bizen ware affect, while
the ware chamber will offer a range of flame and ash affects from
heavy glassy ash laden surfaces on the firebox side of the kiln to
the softer atmospheric fuming for glazed ware on the chimney side
of the kiln.
The firing will start early Saturday morning, and will continue until
late Sunday evening. Different Kiln designs will also be talked about
in comparison to the kiln we will be firing.
The cost of the workshop is
$300.00
